4 Ways To Remember Your Loved One This Year

by | Celebrations of Life, Funerals, Grief

Finding a way to remember your loved one can be difficult to navigate, especially during the first year. You may find it challenging to work out how you would like to memorialise them in a way that is personal and unique to them.

Here are some ideas to help you get started:

The Written Word

There is nothing more distinctive than handwriting. If you have something written by your loved one, then consider framing it. It doesn’t matter if it is a shopping list, a poem, a recipe or even just a note, this can be a wonderful little memorial to the one you love.

This also works for doodles or any artwork that your family member may have created. Why not consider framing a piece and putting it on your wall, coffee table or mantelpiece, depending on the size.

A Keepsake

A lovely meaningful tribute can be wearing something of theirs. This could be an item of jewellery, a scarf or even a jumper on cold winter days. By doing this you are carrying a physical expression of their memory close to your heart.

Something that has become increasingly popular over the past few years is turning a favourite piece of your loved one’s clothing into a memory bear or cushion. This can provide a keepsake for you and other members of your family including future generations. If you are not confident in your own sewing abilities, there are plenty of crafters in your local community who can help you, or even create the keepsake for you. Don’t be afraid to reach out.

Save Them a Seat

Another way of remembering your loved one is to save them a seat at social functions such as weddings and christenings. I have had several families do this during their special occasions, notably with a bouquet of flowers and a little note honouring their loved ones.

Another option is to set a place at your table during your Christmas meal, this can be a lovely reminder of their presence in your memory.

Complete Their Goals

If your loved one had a goal they wished to complete but didn’t manage to do so, completing this for them is a wonderful way of honouring their contribution to the world. This can be something like climbing that mountain, singing at an event, or even something as simple as finishing the book they started.
