Weddings can come with a whole host of traditions and expectations, but it is up to you whether you choose to adhere to them or not. Remember it is your big day and the choice is ultimately yours.
The best part about using a civil celebrant is that it allows for you to have a degree of flexibility when considering your ceremony. You can even toss the rule book out of the window completely and go your own way!
Here are four traditional wedding rules that were made to be broken:
The White Dress
Arguably the most popular tradition to this day, brides are still wearing shades of white to walk down the aisle. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to. You should wear whatever colour makes you feel the most beautiful, whether for aesthetic reasons or because you have an emotional connection to it. On another note, if dresses aren’t your thing there are some absolutely stunning jumpsuits or trouser options you can consider. Breaking free of this tradition gives you more options to consider when it comes to selecting your wedding style.
Bridesmaid Attire
One of the most important decisions a bride must make before her big day is choosing their bridesmaids and then in addition their dresses. This comes with its own set of complications when you try to find a dress that suits the group as a collective and individually, especially as you want to ensure each member of the bridal party looks and feels their best. Why not do away with the additional stress and allow bridesmaids to pick their own attire? Afterall what works for one will not necessarily work for another and this will be a great way for them to showcase their personalities and feel confident whilst supporting you.
Formal Meals
There is an expectation of a sit-down meal during anyone’s wedding day. However, this can take up a large portion of your budget, especially if you have a high number of guests in attendance. For some couples this is not a practical option. When considering the catering portion of your big day you have the ability to get creative.
Instead of a sit-down meal you could provide a hog roast or a buffet. Some people choose to serve tapas dishes throughout the day or if you are getting married in the summer months consider a BBQ option. The choice is yours.
The Division of Families
Traditionally during the wedding ceremony, the bride’s side of the family is usually seated on the left and the grooms on the right. However, there is no reason that you can’t have your family intermingle especially if they are already on good terms. Consider switching things up and letting your guests choose their own seating, after all they’re all going to be family by the time the ceremony ends anyway.
