With sustainability at the forefront of many people’s thoughts these days, it is no wonder that eco-conscious couples are seeking out ways in which to incorporate environmentalism into their weddings.
In this article I have put together top tips for couples to consider whilst planning their big day.
Transport
When thinking about transport for your wedding ceremony, there are several options to consider if you which to reduce carbon emissions. Booking a coach for your guests has proved to be an increasingly popular choice over the past few years, there are even companies who specialise in beautifully decorated wedding coaches. You can encourage your guests to meet at a designated location and have the coach deliver them straight to the ceremony and then on to the reception.
Another idea is to arrange car sharing. Ask your guests if there is space in their car and if they can give other guests a lift. This reduces that all important carbon footprint.
Wedding Favours
When it comes to wedding favours, there are many possibilities to consider if you are taking the ethical approach. There is the DIY alterative which includes using glass jars to create personalised treats such as a hot chocolate kit, handmade candles, or soap. Instead of printing place cards, cupcakes or biscuits can be baked with the name of each guest iced upon them and used as substitute. A lovely idea I have come cross includes giving away packets of seeds, which can be taken home by your guests and planted, providing them with a lovely visual reminder of your big day.
Décor
Wedding décor is essential for bringing both your ceremony and reception to life; however, this is often where the biggest wastage occurs. Consider the possibility of hiring the items you need instead of buying them, such as tablecloths, cutlery and chair covers. This may prove to be more cost effective in the long run. Instead of single use items such as balloons contemplate the use of lanterns instead. This can also reduce electricity usage and create a romantic atmosphere when they are lit.
Consider asking friends and family if they have any items you can borrow for the big day, such as bunting, cake stands and even board games if you are setting up an entertainment area.
Why not utilise technology? Instead, if a seating chart you can hire or borrow a projector and highlight the seating plan on one of the walls with it. It could also be used to showcase some of the couple’s fondest memories when the guests are seated. You could also have your groomsmen or bridesmaids make use of their phones and iPad by allocating them the seating chart and having them guide each guest to their designated seat.
Reuse, Recycle, Renew
Reuse, Recycle, Renew is now becoming a more common phrase these days and it may be wise to apply it to your wedding planning. If you have flowers left over afterwards why not donate these to local care homes or hospices, you could even gift these to your wedding guests or people who have helped you with the ceremony.
If you purchased items such as mirrors or lanterns, think about ways of incorporating them into your home after your big day. If you can’t, drop them off at the nearest charity shop so they can be put to good use by someone else.
